Postural Restoration® is based on the fact that the body is naturally asymmetrical. For example, the torso is balanced with the heart on the left side and the liver on the right side of the body with the purpose of bringing balance to this asymmetrical structure – not symmetry. Your physical therapist uses this treatment to identify imbalances in the body associated with this natural asymmetry. These imbalances can be caused by weakness and overuse of non-optimal muscles. Imbalances will create dysfunctional movement patterns, structural misalignments, and instability which may lead to pain.
Postural Restoration® incorporates manual and non-manual techniques to synchronize hip, abdominal, and respiratory diaphragm muscle activity. This technique increases function and joint mobility while decreasing pain and optimizing postural alignment as well as biomechanics (movement patterns).
Respiration also plays a big part in this process. Many of the muscles used for postural control and respiration are the same. Maintaining optimal posture and breathing habits are important. Frequently, the respiratory diaphragm muscle ends up stabilizing our posture and becomes inefficient with its primary duty of breathing. Postural Restoration® re-teaches the respiratory diaphragm how to once again properly function. Helps with:
